For referring professionals

Program facts you can review before referring someone

Clearer Choice offers self-paced 4-, 6-, 8-, and 12-hour online drug and alcohol awareness education for Canadian adults. This page gives lawyers, employers, schools, insurers, probation offices, and other authorities the facts needed to choose the duration that fits a particular requirement.

Acceptance belongs to the referring authority.

Clearer Choice is independent education. It does not claim universal court or government approval and does not predict a legal, employment, insurance, or academic outcome.

Objective requirements, recorded by the platform

4–12h

Timed participation

Each course contains the stated number of 60-minute modules. Time advances only while the lesson is visible, the browser has focus, and recent learner activity is detected.

✎

Private written work

A reflection and prevention plan document learning and planning. The prompts discourage unnecessary disclosure of trauma, offences, diagnoses, or other people's private information.

80

Knowledge assessment

The learner must score at least 80% on the course-specific assessment. Three ordinary attempts are included.

Program options

A shared foundation with increasing depth

  1. 4 hours: impairment, substances, consequences, and choices
  2. 6 hours: adds harm reduction, support, and prevention planning
  3. 8 hours: adds emergency safety, communication, boundaries, and trust
  4. 12 hours: adds coping, setbacks, care pathways, and long-term maintenance

Eligible completed modules carry into a longer Clearer Choice course, while each longer course still requires new written work and its own assessment. Review the safety scope and public-health sources.

Scope

What the certificate does—and does not—say

It confirms that the named learner completed the exact recorded hours shown, submitted the required written work, and passed that course’s assessment. It does not certify sobriety, fitness, treatment, diagnosis, remorse, clinical improvement, or acceptance by a particular authority.

Clearer Choice is not a treatment provider, crisis service, law firm, or government agency. For a requirement involving treatment, assessment, licence reinstatement, or an approved provider list, confirm the correct service directly with the responsible authority.
